In late July, Portugal’s Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the yellow heat warning for Madeira’s southern coast and mountainous regions until 18:00 on Monday, 3 August, noting temperatures near 30 °C and a very high UV index of 8‑10. The agency advised strong sun protection measures and hydration. By early August, the alert was prolonged again, now remaining in force until 19:00 on Wednesday, 5 August, as unusually high temperatures persisted. Authorities continued to urge residents and visitors to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure, and follow local guidance to mitigate health risks. On 5 August, IPMA further extended the yellow heat warning to cover all meteorological zones of the Madeira archipelago—including the north and south coasts, the mountainous interior of Madeira Island and Porto Santo—keeping the alert active until 18:00 UTC (19:00 local time) on Friday, 7 August. While the yellow level is the least severe on IPMA’s scale, it still signals a risk to outdoor activities and advises the public to monitor forecasts and take precautionary measures against the heat.
