Madhya Pradesh medical intern stipend protests
Overview
Medical interns in Madhya Pradesh initiated widespread protests, centered in Bhopal, demanding a monthly stipend increase from approximately ₹14,337 to ₹30,000. The agitation disrupted outpatient department services at several government hospitals as doctors boycotted duties. The situation escalated when police used water cannons and lathi charges to disperse a march toward the Chief Minister’s residence, resulting in injuries to some interns.
Following discussions between representatives and Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, a tentative agreement was reached to raise the stipend to ₹21,500. The protests officially ended after the state government announced a 50 percent increase and removed two police officers involved in the recent dispersal of protesters. While the Madhya Pradesh interns concluded their three-day sit-in, similar stipend-related protests were noted in Uttarakhand, where interns at Government Doon Medical College Hospital also secured an increase to ₹25,000, though postgraduate doctors there continued their own agitation.
