Madonna University in Rivers State took disciplinary action against nursing students after a viral TikTok video showed them dancing in hospital areas, including waiting rooms and staircases. The video, captioned “No sick o, na Gen Z full hospital,” drew criticism regarding professional ethics in clinical settings. The university senate expelled one final-year student and suspended 14 other 500-level students. In response, the affected students and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have appealed for leniency. A final-year student released a video highlighting the academic and financial consequences of the expulsion, while NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez requested the university replace the punishment with a stern warning to protect the students’ future careers. Adding to the calls for leniency, Adesina Adegbite, the former General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association and the West African Bar Association, has appealed to the university management to reconsider the sanctions. Adegbite urged the institution to apply principles of “fairness, proportionality, and compassion,” warning that the current disciplinary measures could severely impact the students' academic and professional futures.
