In late July 2026, the Madrid High Court issued a binding ruling that the Community of Madrid must allocate about €38 million—originally collected through a 5 % surcharge on home‑insurance policies for firefighters—to the fire service’s equipment, vehicles and infrastructure, rejecting the regional government’s argument that the case differed from a prior Asturias dispute.

Two days later, municipal opposition to a separate levy intensified as 94 of the region’s 179 towns filed lawsuits challenging the 2026 waste‑tax ordinance. The disputes, involving major municipalities such as Fuenlabrada, Móstoles, Alcorcón and the capital itself, centre on alleged inconsistencies in applying the national waste‑management law. Madrid’s mayor prepared a third draft of the city’s tax ordinance while courts prepared to rule on the challenges.
