Maersk wind-assisted propulsion trials

Overview

A. P. Moller – Maersk has partnered with British firm Anemoi Marine Technologies to trial wind-assisted propulsion on a container vessel. The project involves installing a 35-meter-high, 5-meter-diameter Rotor Sail on an 8,700 TEU Maersk Lima class ship, with completion expected in mid-2027.

The technology utilizes the Magnus effect, where a rotating cylinder creates aerodynamic lift to provide additional thrust. This system is designed to reduce the load on the ship’s main engine, potentially saving approximately one tonne of fuel and reducing CO2 emissions by three tonnes per day during suitable wind conditions. This marks the first time the technology will be tested on a container ship rather than a bulk carrier.

The vessel will undergo commercial testing on North and South Atlantic routes to evaluate efficiency and integration with onboard operations. Maersk intends to use the data gathered from this real-world application to determine if the technology can be scaled across its fleet of more than 700 ships.
