Magnetic technology for water plastic removal

Overview

Researchers in Australia and Spain are developing magnetic technologies to remove microplastics and nanoplastics from water supplies.

In Australia, RMIT University researchers, in partnership with One Eye Industries, developed a reusable magnetic powder. This material can remove over 95% of microplastics and nanoplastics, including particles as small as 30 nanometers, within one hour. Tests on industrial laundry wastewater showed the removal of over 88% of polyester microfibers. The technology also shows potential for capturing PFAS, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical residues.

In Spain, researchers at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM) have created magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles shaped like “nanoflowers”. These particles target nanoplastics from materials like PET. The research indicates that one gram of these nanoflowers can capture up to 10,000 milligrams of nanoplastics. Once captured, the material may be used to extract organic dyes or heavy metals from water.
