Actor Mahershala Ali has officially departed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe project ‘Blade’. Ali expressed dissatisfaction with the project’s conclusion following the 2022 departure of the original director, noting that despite undergoing extensive physical training, the effort went unused. He stated in a GQ interview, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it.” Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Ali confirmed his exit from the long-delayed reboot, which has faced years of development hurdles including multiple director changes and script revisions. “I’m done. I’m doing this and anything else moving forward. I’m over that, I’m done with that,” Ali remarked. Despite the exit, he expressed gratitude toward Marvel Studios for funding over a year of intensive physical and sword training, noting, “They helped pay for our movie, so thank you. We wouldn't, we couldn't have afforded to.” In a subsequent GQ interview, Ali detailed the personal and physical toll caused by the project’s indefinite shelving. He noted that his year of intense martial arts and sword training resulted in a serious knee injury. Furthermore, Ali revealed that the production delays forced him to uproot his family to Atlanta and caused him to decline other professional opportunities due to exclusivity agreements. He expressed support for Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who had previously described himself as a “gigantic loser and failure” regarding the project’s delays; Ali indicated he agreed with that sentiment. Following his exit, Ali has reunited with director Bassam Tariq—who was previously attached to direct ‘Blade’ before departing—for the action-drama ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’. The film, which utilizes the sword-fighting training Ali prepared for ‘Blade’, is scheduled for a theatrical release via Amazon MGM Studios on September 25, 2026. Ali noted that the experience taught him to prioritize unique, purposeful stories over large-scale reboots.
