The 2026 Mainz Oktoberfest faced potential cancellation due to safety and permit disputes regarding its main festival tent. Building Department head Ludwig Holle stated the tent was “not permissible” because its building permit had expired in 2017, citing concerns over fire protection and structural stability. The city issued an ultimatum for the operator, Mainzer Messe Gesellschaft, to submit necessary documentation. Following a rejection of an emergency application by the Mainz Administrative Court, organizers and the hospitality association Dehoga sought to reverse the ban. The legal dispute focused on whether the tent should be classified as a ‘temporary structure’ (fliegender Bau) or a permanent assembly venue. Dehoga President Gereon Haumann stated that newly submitted expert reports confirmed the structure meets all stability and fire protection requirements. Organizers noted that a change in tent configuration was required after a third-party provider canceled their services. Despite these efforts, the City of Mainz has denied permission for the 20th Mainz Oktoberfest. This denial follows an attempt by organizers to relocate the event to a newly erected tent at the Hechtsheim exhibition grounds. Authorities maintained that unresolved issues regarding structural stability, fire safety, and the lack of necessary building permits and expert documentation persist. The city reiterated that the tent cannot be classified as a temporary structure, thereby requiring more rigorous building approvals. Dehoga President Gereon Haumann expressed dismay at the decision, calling for increased cooperation between the city and the hospitality sector.
