Malaika Mihambo, the Olympic long jump champion, experienced a challenging period in mid-2026 competitions. At the German national athletics championships in Bochum, Mihambo finished second behind Mikaelle Assani. Mihambo attributed her second-place finish of 6.63 meters to unfavorable weather, stating, “Der Wind war nicht auf meiner Seite.” Following this, Mihambo competed in the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Although she recorded a jump of 7.10 meters during the qualifying round, she finished fifth in the final with a best effort of 6.94 meters, citing meters. She cited technical errors and difficult wind conditions at the Alexander Stadium. Stadium, noting she was often too far from the board. This marked her first absence from a major championship podium since 2014. The gold medal was won by Italy’s Larissa Iapichino (7.00 meters), followed by Great Britain’s Jasmin Sawyers (6.99 meters) and France’s Hilary Kpatcha (6.98 meters). Reflecting on the result, the 32-year-old athlete described the experience of disappointment as a “privilege” to feel after competing at such a high level. Despite these setbacks, Mihambo has reaffirmed her intention to continue her professional career through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
