Following the February 2023 earthquakes, reconstruction and restoration efforts in Malatya have progressed through the reopening of key commercial and cultural sites. In July 2026, the Bakırcılar Market and Şire Pazarı reopened after being rebuilt under the “Merkez Çarşı Project.” Managed by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the project included extensive ground reinforcement with thousands of fore piles and the construction of new commercial units with modern amenities like underground parking. In August 2026, the Malatya Archaeology Museum was prepared for reopening after undergoing restoration to repair earthquake damage. Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the project upgraded exhibition halls, administrative units, storage, and landscaping. The 1,350-square-meter facility features chronological and thematic displays, including artifacts from Arslantepe, the Upper Euphrates Basin, and the Darende Maşattepe Tumulus. Simultaneously, religious and community reconstruction continues in the region. In the Darende district of Malatya, the reconstruction of the Balaban Çarşı Mosque has reached approximately 80% completion. Funded by a local association with permission from the Governor’s Office and the Presidency of Religious Affairs, the project has finished the main dome and structural system, though further donations are needed for exterior walls and interior facilities such as a guest house and kitchen complex. However, safety concerns persist in other parts of the province; in Hekimhan, residents report that the damaged spire of the Hafız Mosque remains a safety hazard.
