Reconstruction and restoration efforts in Malatya following the February 2023 earthquakes continue to progress through the reopening of commercial and cultural sites. In July 2026, the Bakırcılar Market and Şire Pazarı reopened under the “Merkez Çarşı Project.” By August 2026, the Malatya Archaeology Museum was prepared for reopening following extensive restoration. Residential reconstruction has reached significant milestones. In mid-August 2026, Governor Seddar Yavuz announced that 30 rural reinforced concrete houses in the Akçadağ district’s Keller neighborhood were ready for handover. Malatya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Sami Er reported that 80,000 housing units have been built to replace earthquake destruction, facilitating a faster recovery than initially anticipated. On August 22, 2026, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum participated in a program marking progress, which included the opening of the Merkez Bazaar and a treatment plant comprising 5,716 independent units. Following these developments, Governor Yavuz and AK Party MP İnanç Siraç Kara Ölmeztoprak conducted field inspections in Akçadağ to monitor the status of permanent housing, workplaces, and rural residential construction, meeting with local mukhtars to evaluate neighborhood needs. However, the reconstruction process has faced safety setbacks. A fire at a housing construction site in the Yeşilyurt district destroyed approximately 180 worker containers. A subsequent fire broke out at a TOKİ reserve area construction site in the Battalgazi district, where flames spread between containers and damaged some newly constructed houses. While no fatalities or injuries were ~~reported in these incidents,~~ reported, the recurring fires in worker housing areas have raised concerns regarding safety protocols. Religious and historical reconstruction also continues. While the damaged spire of the Hafız Mosque in Hekimhan remains a safety hazard, the Balaban Çarşı Mosque in Darende has reached 80% completion.
