Malawi gold trade formalization and mining expansion

Overview

Malawi is expanding its formal gold-trading network to increase foreign exchange earnings, create jobs, and combat smuggling. The Export Development Fund (EDF) is establishing four new trading centres in Karonga, Mzimba (Jenda), Mangochi, and Blantyre through a partnership with FDH Bank and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. The FDH Bank will host centres in Karonga, Jenda, and Mangochi, while Blantyre operations will be located at Reserve Bank of Malawi premises.

This initiative aims to bring official buying services closer to mining communities to reduce reliance on informal black markets. Since the formal gold market was established in 2021, Malawi has purchased 1.63 tonnes of gold through official channels. Government officials estimate that the nation loses approximately $700 million annually to illicit gold trade. While artisanal mining has been identified at over 100 sites across 26 districts, fewer than five currently sell to the government.

To further bolster the sector, the Malawi Mining Investment Company (Mamico) plans to begin mining and processing gold next year. Executive Director Grey Kalindekafe noted that geological investigations have identified seven primary gold-bearing deposits, and the company is studying mining models from Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Looking toward long-term economic diversification, Malawi has set a target of $30 billion in mining exports by 2040. This strategy seeks to leverage deposits of uranium, graphite, rare earth elements, rutile, and niobium to move the economy beyond tobacco, supported by a World Bank project to improve licensing and geological data collection.
