Malaysia anti-money laundering enforcement actions

Overview

Between 2022 and September 2026, Malaysia’s Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) investigation team froze RM4.3 billion in assets, seized RM1 billion, and forfeited RM48.3 million. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reported that enforcement actions targeted stock market manipulation, corporate disclosure breaches, and illegal money lending. Additionally, recovery efforts by various agencies have reached RM37.53 billion, with RM28 billion utilized to settle 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) debts.

Specific enforcement efforts include ‘Op Viking,’ an investigation into allegations of a ‘corporate mafia.’ As of late September 2026, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has frozen or seized approximately RM409.21 million in assets, including 404 bank accounts, 417 central depository system accounts, and 70 share-trading accounts. The probe also involves eight properties and 11 vehicles. The investigation follows reports that enforcement agencies may have abused their power to pressure businesspeople into selling shares at low prices to facilitate corporate takeovers. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that no Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers have been identified as involved in the matter.
