Malaysia-Bangladesh labor recruitment initiative
Overview
Malaysia and Bangladesh have initiated a phased labor recruitment program to increase the number of Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia. Initially, the two nations agreed to recruit 10,000 workers on a “zero-cost” basis through the state-owned Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL) to ensure a transparent process following past mismanagement.
This initiative has since expanded, with plans to recruit approximately 200,000 workers from Bangladesh over a six-month period. While the scale of recruitment has grown, concerns have emerged regarding recruitment syndicates in Bangladesh. Reports indicate that some of the 25 recently selected agencies lack prior experience in the Malaysian market, leading to warnings that syndicates may charge workers between Tk 600,000 and Tk 700,000 to secure employment.
