Malaysia is advancing its digital and technological landscape through new labor policies and infrastructure initiatives. In June 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs implemented a revised Employment Pass policy featuring three salary categories designed to ensure expatriate expertise facilitates knowledge transfer to the local workforce. To support its digital ambitions, the country is focusing on AI-driven infrastructure and cybersecurity. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority scheduled the Data Centre Nexus 2026 for September to address demands for advanced computing and sustainable digital ecosystems. Following these developments, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo called for increased private sector collaboration to accelerate digital progress and co-design regulatory environments for artificial intelligence. Additionally, the CyberDSA 2026 conference is set for October in Kuala Lumpur to discuss AI governance and digital trust. In September 2026, the government introduced the National AI Action Plan 2026-2030, also known as ‘AI Nation 2030’. This strategy aims to transition the nation from providing digital infrastructure to developing homegrown AI solutions, with the goal of boosting annual GDP by 0.8 to 1.2 percentage points and creating between 300,000 and 500,000 new AI-related jobs. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil noted that AI applications will focus on sectors including semiconductors, healthcare, agriculture, and logistics. Private sector involvement includes a commitment from Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) to nurture 30,000 local AI talents. As the digital boom accelerates, the 2027 Budget has prioritized national security and technological advancement. The Home Ministry plans to use drone technology and AI for border control, while the National Scam Response Centre will develop an AI-powered application to help citizens verify suspicious phone numbers, bank accounts, and links. To combat cybercrime, efforts will also include enhancing the Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children system and intensifying the Safer Internet Campaign in schools.
