Malaysia Formula 1 hosting developments

Discussions regarding Malaysia’s involvement in Formula 1 have focused on the costs and logistics of hosting races at the Sepang International Circuit. Sepang International Circuit CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif estimated that securing a permanent slot on the Formula 1 calendar would require an annual expenditure of at least RM300 million, including hosting fees and local preparation costs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim noted that the upcoming one-off race, scheduled for October 2–4, 2026, would require significantly less investment, with approximately RM16 million for circuit maintenance and RM40 million to meet F1 standards.

The 2026 event will be held as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with most proceeds directed to Bahrain. To facilitate local access, the Malaysian government announced ‘Madani tickets’ for MyKad holders, offering three-day access starting at RM200. This initiative follows agreements with Bahrain to allow more Malaysian citizens to attend the event, which marks the return of Formula 1 to the country for the first time since 2017.
