In mid-August 2026, fuel prices in Jamaica and Malaysia were scheduled to decrease due to shifts in global oil market costs and ex-refinery prices. In Malaysia, the finance ministry announced reductions for RON97, unsubsidised RON95, and diesel, noting that while prices were dropping, volatility was expected due to global crude oil movements. By early September 2026, Malaysia's Ministry of Finance announced a further reduction in retail prices for RON97, unsubsidised RON95, and unsubsidised diesel for the week of September 3 to 9. The ministry attributed this to lower global crude oil prices during the majority of the Automatic Pricing Mechanism calculation period. However, officials noted that geopolitical tensions in West Asia caused prices to rise toward the end of the period. The ministry also highlighted that the global market for refined petroleum products remains tight due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, reduced refining capacity, and fuel export restrictions. While China has begun easing petroleum export restrictions, regional supplies have not yet returned to pre-conflict levels. To mitigate volatility, the Malaysian government is continuing its BUDI MADANI targeted subsidy program. For the period of September 10 to 16, 2026, non-subsidized fuel prices in Malaysia increased by 25 sen per liter. RON97 rose to RM4.50 per liter, non-subsidized RON95 to RM4.02 per liter, and non-subsidized diesel to RM4.92 per liter. The Ministry of Finance attributed these hikes to rising global crude oil prices driven by geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran and potential supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Subsidized prices remain unchanged, with RON95 at RM1.99 per liter under the BUDI95 program and diesel at RM2.10 per liter under the BUDI Diesel program.
