Malaysia solar energy infrastructure initiatives

Overview

Malaysia is implementing various solar energy initiatives to improve rural infrastructure and reduce government energy costs. The Village Street Light (LJK) program is expanding solar street light installations to rural areas nationwide to assist locations with limited electrical access. In Johor, the 2026 Phase 1 implementation involves the phased installation of 3,833 units across six districts.

Parallel to rural lighting, the government is installing solar photovoltaic systems across federal premises, including 46 government buildings, 283 rural schools, and various police and indigenous village sites. Managed by the Public Works Department, these systems aim to save up to RM115 million annually and support the National Energy Transition Roadmap's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
