Malaysia and Turkey have strengthened strategic defense cooperation through the launch of the MPMS 1, a 99-meter, 3,300-tonne multi-purpose mission ship. Built at the Desan Shipyard in Turkey, the vessel is designed for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to combat illegal fishing, smuggling, and maritime incursions. The ship is equipped with advanced Turkish defense systems, including auto cannons, unmanned aerial vehicles, and a helicopter landing pad. This vessel is the first of two offshore patrol ships being constructed under a contract valued at approximately US$150 million. Following the launch ceremony attended by Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, the vessel is expected to begin its voyage to Malaysia in January 2027, with full delivery and handover targeted for early 2027. Technical details released following the launch at the ATLAS facilities in Kocaeli indicate the MPMS 1 is engineered for high endurance, capable of 30-day continuous patrols. Its defense suite includes an ASELSAN SMASH 200/30 remotely controlled 30mm gun, two 12.7mm weapons, and Thales SMART-L radar for long-range situational awareness. The vessel will also integrate two HAVELSAN BozBey drones and four high-speed interceptor boats. MMEA Director-General Admiral Mohd Rosli Abdullah stated the ship will play a critical role in patrolling the South China Sea. While the first vessel is valued at US$68.8 million, a second vessel, the MPMS-2, is under a separate US$83.75 million agreement. Delivery for the initial vessel is expected between January and March 2027.
