Malaysia’s federal unity government, formed by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalitions, has faced significant instability due to internal rifts. Tensions escalated following accusations that BN attempted to undermine PH through political maneuvering in Negeri Sembilan and by courting rival parties. A specific flashpoint involved social media commentary regarding the judicial review of former Prime Minister Najib Razak. This friction expanded to include concerns regarding the relationship between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The decision by BN to align with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) opposition bloc during state elections in Negeri Sembilan was described by former minister Khairy Jamaluddin as creating a “massive rupture” within the governing coalition. Conversely, analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri dismissed the idea that Malay political unity guarantees stability, calling it a “myth” based on historical party splits. In response to speculation about government fragility, Democratic Action Party (DAP) Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook stated there is no need to dissolve Parliament so long as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim maintains a majority. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also denied reports of friction with the Prime Minister, clarifying that Cabinet meetings are proceeding normally and reaffirming Umno’s commitment to the Unity Government.
