Former President Abdulla Yameen has intensified his criticism of the Maldivian government, specifically targeting the Rasmalé project. Initially, Yameen criticized the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) for failing to provide strong opposition leadership and questioned the handling of corruption cases. Parliamentary discussions also emerged regarding the Rasmalé project, with concerns raised over a September 21 agreement to lease land for 99 years without sufficient rental income or acquisition costs. As the situation progressed, Yameen characterized the 99-year lease with Abu Dhabi-based Eagle Hills as a “crime” that threatens national interests and coastal security. Concurrently, legal proceedings against Yameen have advanced in the Criminal Court. State prosecutors have accused him of directing a corruption scandal involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), alleging he abused presidential authority to facilitate undervalued island leases in exchange for bribes. During closing arguments at the Criminal Court, prosecutors specifically alleged that the lease of Fuggiri island to a Dubai-based company was structured to generate USD 1 million in bribes for Yameen. The prosecution further claimed Yameen abused his authority by appointing Ahmed Adeeb to high-ranking positions despite corruption reports. While the state alleges the Fuggiri lease was undervalued to divert funds, Yameen’s defense has questioned the basis of the prosecution. Adding to the political pressure, former Home Minister Imran Abdulla has also criticized the Rasmalé development, labeling it a ‘big scam’ that offers no benefit to citizens. Abdulla alleged the project could lead to national bankruptcy and a loss of sovereignty, noting that canceling the agreement could cost billions of dollars, complicating future efforts to terminate it.
