Maldives port relocation and economic development
Overview
The Maldives government is undertaking a major project to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi to stimulate economic growth and reduce the national cost of living. The initiative aims to address current logistical challenges and space constraints at the Malé harbour, where cargo unloading currently takes between seven and fourteen days.
Officials expect the new 60-hectare Thilafushi facility to significantly improve efficiency, potentially reducing cargo clearance to as little as one or two days. This improvement is intended to ensure fresher food supplies and lower commodity costs. The port is expected to initially handle 390,000 TEUs annually, with a long-term capacity target of 1.8 million TEUs.
While the first phase of the project is slated for inauguration on November 11, 2027, Maldives Ports Limited has indicated that operations may begin as early as October 28, 2026. Amidst these developments, the Maldives economy showed a 2.4% growth rate in August 2026, driven by increases in financial services, construction, and wholesale and retail trade.
