Overview

Malian journalist Abdrahamane Kéita, director of the newspaper Le Témoin, was sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of one million CFA francs by the national cybercrime pole.

The conviction followed comments Kéita made during a June television debate on Renouveau TV, where he suggested the city of Kidal was being “administered” by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). Prosecutors charged him with spreading false information and committing a regionalist offense to undermine national unity.

Kéita maintained his innocence, arguing he was repeating an interviewee’s terms. His defense team intends to appeal. Reporters Without Borders described the verdict as a “concerning signal” and an instance of the “criminalization of journalism through cybercrime laws.”
