Pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has intensified as the club struggles through the 2026/27 season. Following a 1-1 draw against Leeds United, the team’s poor form continued with a derby defeat to Manchester City and a 3-2 Carabao Cup exit to Brighton & Hove Albion. While Carrick previously dismissed sacking rumors as ‘ridiculous,’ recent developments suggest his departure may be imminent following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, which extended a seven-match winless streak. Internal tensions surfaced as captain Bruno Fernandes publicly criticized Carrick’s tactical decisions regarding defensive structure and man-to-man pressing. Amidst this instability, the club has faced significant injury concerns involving Benjamin Šeško, Patrick Dorgu, and Lisandro Martínez. Crisis deepened following a 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth, which left the club in 16th place, its worst start to a season in 40 years, and extended the winless streak to eight matches. Following emergency meetings at the Carrington training center involving CEO Omar Berrada, Football Director Jason Wilcox, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and the Glazer family, Carrick has survived the immediate crisis. The board decided to allow him to continue his duties, including leading the upcoming away match against Chelsea. However, the situation worsened following a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, marking the club's ninth match without a victory and their third consecutive loss. This defeat dropped the club to 17th place, level with Crystal Palace in the relegation zone. In response, management has granted Carrick a final opportunity to improve performance, intending to keep him in his position at least until the international break. ~~The club has now~~ Carrick recently secured ~~only one Premier League~~ a 3-2 comeback victory against AS Roma in ~~its first nine matches~~ the UEFA Champions League, featuring goals from Matheus Cunha and ~~remains on~~ a ~~nine-game winless run across all competitions.~~ Bruno Fernandes penalty.
