Michael Carrick continues to face mounting pressure as Manchester United struggles for consistency. Following a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, the club secured only two wins in its first 12 competitive matches. A 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth and a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como contributed to a winless streak that extended to nine matches across all competitions, marking the club’s longest such run since 1988. The team currently sits 17th in the Premier League with only seven points, just one point above the relegation zone. On November 2, 2026, Manchester United ended its nine-match winless streak with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against AS Roma in the Champions League. After trailing 2-0 at halftime following goals from Matías Soulé and a Donyell Malen penalty, Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken penalty in the 58th minute. Matheus Cunha scored twice in the 83rd and 86th minutes to secure the win, though he was sent off with a second yellow card during stoppage time. The match was also marked by protests from home supporters against the club's ownership. Following the match, Carrick praised Cunha’s intensity but reportedly instructed the forward to head straight to the dressing room to avoid further disciplinary issues. Fernandes addressed rumors of internal friction, stating that the team is ~~working together and that his recent benching was a professional decision.~~ focused on collective success rather than individual job security. Despite the victory, succession speculation remains intense. Club leadership is reportedly evaluating Carrick's future during the November international break. Director of Football Jason Wilcox has identified Eddie Howe as a preferred candidate, while Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell reportedly supports Julian Nagelsmann. Additionally, officials have identified Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as the “ideal” candidate, though Villa has expressed no intention of letting him leave and concerns remain regarding the level of autonomy Emery would possess at Old Trafford.
