Manching Celtic gold museum theft convictions

The German Federal Court of Justice has upheld prison sentences for individuals involved in the November 2022 theft of a significant Celtic gold treasure from the Kelten-Römer-Museum in Manching, Upper Bavaria.

The stolen collection, described as the largest Celtic gold discovery of the 20th century, included 483 gold coins and a gold cast cake dating back approximately 2,100 years. Following an initial ruling by the Ingolstadt District Court, the Federal Court confirmed sentences ranging from seven to eleven years for the primary defendants.

While investigators recovered approximately 70 to 72 coins in the form of melted gold lumps, most of the historical artifacts remain missing. Authorities expressed concerns that the remainder of the treasure may have been melted down. One defendant was acquitted of the specific museum burglary due to insufficient evidence but was convicted of other offenses.
