Manipur ethnic violence legal proceedings

The Supreme Court of India has taken steps to expedite legal proceedings related to the 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur. Initially, the Court directed the creation of special courts to conduct day-to-day trials for criminal cases arising from the unrest, which resulted in over 200 deaths and significant displacement. The bench emphasized the need for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and state Special Investigation Teams to expedite investigations and provide charge sheets to victims promptly.

As the legal process progressed, the Supreme Court proposed a more specific structure for these dedicated trial courts. The bench suggested establishing one court to exclusively manage cases investigated by the CBI and a second court for matters probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Court also expressed concern regarding whether existing courts were prioritizing these specific violence-related cases or managing unrelated matters, while instructing security agencies to ensure investigations can proceed without disruption.
