Following ethnic violence that began in May 2023, efforts to restore normalcy in Manipur have focused on central government support and community unity. Union Home Minister Amit Shah previously pledged full central support to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, noting the resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service. Chief Minister Singh has consistently advocated for social cohesion, calling upon Manipur’s 36 communities—including the Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Naga—to unite for the state’s integrity. During a ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ event in Imphal West, he highlighted historical collective resistance from groups like the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities to encourage a shared sense of identity. He reiterated that his responsibility is to restore peace and urged residents to utilize government schemes for regional development. However, the security situation has faced recent setbacks. Following the killing of three civilians by armed miscreants in the Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, Chief Minister Singh met with leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc. Led by Okram Ibobi Singh, the delegation urged the convening of an all-party meeting to address ongoing violence involving the Naga, Kuki, and Meitei communities. The opposition called for direct political intervention from the central government, while Okram Ibobi Singh questioned the state’s ability to protect citizens, stating that the law and order machinery has failed to prevent recurring bloodshed. The Chief Minister described the discussions as constructive and assured the delegation that the incidents would be investigated. In response to localized concerns, Chief Minister Singh also met with representatives from the Maring and Tangkhul Naga communities of the Machi Block in Tengnoupal district. The delegation presented urgent requirements for infrastructure, including improved roads, bridges, and the upgrading of the Machi Primary Health Centre to a Community Health Centre.
