Manitoba Hydro gas turbine expansion controversy

Manitoba Hydro is facing scrutiny over a $3-billion plan to purchase three 250-megawatt gas-combustion turbines by 2030 to address a projected shortfall of up to 600 megawatts in firm electricity capacity. The utility’s proposal has drawn criticism from environmental groups following reliability issues at the Brandon generating station, where outages occurred during several high-usage periods over the last five winters. Manitoba Hydro officials attributed these outages to maintenance and staffing issues.

The project has encountered further complications due to trade tensions between Canada and the United States. While Manitoba Hydro has a reservation agreement with GE Vernova, a company based in Massachusetts, Premier Wab Kinew has expressed uncertainty regarding the deal. Kinew suggested the province might prioritize infrastructure spending on companies that respect Canadian and Manitoban business interests if trade disputes affect U.S. firms. Additionally, the Climate Action Team Manitoba has questioned the consistency of investing billions in U.S.-manufactured technology amidst ongoing trade conflicts.
