Cuban author and journalist María Elena Llana has been nominated for the 2026 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, regarded as the most prestigious award in Spanish-language literature. The 90-year-old nominee was proposed by Dr. Alejandra Giovanna Amatto Cuña, a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a member of the prize jury. Llana, who received Cuba’s National Literature Prize in 2023, has a career spanning more than 60 years. Her body of work includes ‘La reja’, ‘Casas del Vedado’, ‘Castillos de naipes’, and ‘Ronda en el Malecón’. Her writing is noted for blending memory, human relationships, and elements of fantasy and magical realism. If successful, she would become the third Cuban woman to be nominated for the prize. Following her candidacy, the Cuban Book Institute organized a tribute for the author at the Dulce María Loynaz Cultural Center in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood. In a formal proposal to the 2026 Cervantes Prize jury, the Institute identified Llana as one of the island’s most significant narrators, praising her stylistic dexterity, mastery of irony and humor, and her unique perspective on the social environment of the capital. Her work, which includes over fifteen books, is studied internationally in countries such as Spain, the United States, and Mexico.
