The city of Naples is integrating tributes to Diego Armando Maradona into its cultural and urban infrastructure. In the Quartieri Spagnoli, a historic mural dedicated to the footballer has undergone restoration and is awaiting an official unveiling, expected in early September. The mural remains a significant landmark for tourism and local business. Simultaneously, the city is expanding its public transport network through a project to reactivate the tram network after approximately 25 years. As part of this expansion, a new fleet of trams is being introduced, including vehicles featuring a tribute to Maradona. The Turkish company Bozankaya is supplying the fleet, with new models set to be showcased at an international trade fair in Berlin. As of early September 2026, the restoration of the Maradona mural on via Emanuele De Deo is nearing completion. The protective panels have been removed, revealing the updated artwork. The project extended beyond the mural itself to include local infrastructure improvements, such as new paving for the surrounding streets, reinforcing the site’s role as a central component of the neighborhood’s identity. Adding to these tributes, the Fondazione PUPI, founded by Javier Zanetti and Paula de la Fuente, is scheduled to host a large-scale charity event on September 26 at Piazza del Plebiscito. Organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Naples, the event will support six social solidarity projects targeting vulnerable areas of the city. The evening will feature a tribute to Maradona involving his family and associates, including Claudia Villafañe and Diego Maradona Jr., alongside various football figures and musical performers.
