Honduran football club Marathón has maintained strong competitive momentum during the 2026-2027 period. Following a 1-1 draw against Real España and a critical Concacaf Central American Cup campaign, the club has seen significant success in the Liga Nacional Apertura tournament. In the sixth round of the Apertura, Marathón secured a 5-0 victory over Estrella Roja at the Estadio Francisco Morazán, with Nicolás Messiniti and Isaac Castillo scoring twice each, and Javier Arriaga adding a fifth. This result brought Marathón to 14 points, tying them with league leader Olimpia, though Olimpia held the top position due to goal difference. ~~During this same round, Real España also reached 14 points following a 2-0 win against UPNFM.~~ Marathón subsequently claimed the top spot in the standings after defeating Olimpia 1-0 in the National Classic. The decisive match at the Francisco Morazán Stadium was influenced by a 51st-minute red card for Olimpia’s Emmanuel Cuello. Marathón capitalized on the numerical advantage, with captain Henry Figueroa scoring a header in the 82nd minute. Supported by key interventions from goalkeeper Jonathan Rougier, the victory moved Marathón to 17 points, placing them ahead of Real España, Olimpia, and Motagua. The match was described as highly contentious, featuring multiple yellow cards and two red cards. While Olimpia’s Emanuel Cuello was sent off in the 54th minute, Marathón’s Brian Farioli also received a red card late in the game, leaving both sides with 10 players for the final stretch. This win ended Olimpia’s undefeated streak through seven matches, dropping them to third place with 14 points, while Real España moved to second with 15 points.
