Overview

The Marche region is implementing new measures to optimize its healthcare system and improve service accessibility.

Initially, the regional government approved a resolution to use overbooking as a structural tool to combat long waiting lists. This policy targets specialist visits, mammographies, ultrasounds, and bone densitometry by scheduling additional appointments to compensate for last-minute cancellations. Regional Councilor Paolo Calcinaro described the measure as an “organizational tool to optimize time and improve access for citizens.”

Following this, the region expanded its healthcare model through an integrative agreement with over 500 public and private pharmacies. This initiative, aimed at supporting the elderly and chronically ill in smaller municipalities, enhances the ‘Pharmacy of Services’ model. Key updates include simplified colorectal cancer screening via local pharmacies, expanded vaccination offerings, and reinforced telemedicine capabilities such as electrocardiograms and spirometry. The agreement also includes a solidarity fund to support smaller pharmacies with a turnover of less than 300,000 euros.
