Atlético de Madrid footballer Marcos Llorente has faced backlash following controversial claims regarding health and sun protection. Llorente used his social media platform and television appearances to question the necessity of sunscreen, suggesting that individuals instead maintain a “coherent relationship with the sun” through gradual exposure.

These statements prompted the Spanish Association of Scientific Communication (AEC) to request a rectification from the broadcaster, citing concerns that Llorente was blending personal experience with skepticism toward dermatological and oncological evidence.

In response to the criticism, Llorente issued a statement via social media asserting that he no longer cares about public disapproval. He argued that his goal is to encourage people to “think for themselves, ask questions, and seek answers” rather than demanding blind belief, noting that the controversy has actually increased the reach of his message.

Following his retirement from the Spanish national team, Llorente has continued to defend his lifestyle and wellness project, Free Human. Addressing scrutiny regarding his views on nutrition, circadian rhythms, and general health habits, he reiterated his stance on social media, stating, “At this point, sincerely, I don't care what you say about me or what you say behind my back,” and maintaining that criticism only serves to increase the visibility of his message.
