Marie Curie Hospital child mortality investigation

Overview

Romanian prosecutors have been called to investigate the deaths of 150 children at the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital in Bucharest. The Foundation for the Defense of Citizens against State Abuse (FACIAS) filed a complaint following reports that these deaths occurred over a six-year period while the infants were awaiting beds in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Reports indicate the NICU, which is legally authorized for 22 beds, has been operating beyond capacity. Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoveanu noted that two deaths occurred within the last two weeks and that seven severely ill newborns remain on the waiting list. FACIAS is seeking to identify the officials and institutions responsible for the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
