Croatian defender Mario Vušković has officially rejoined Hamburger SV training on September 15, 2026, following a four-year suspension for a 2022 EPO doping violation. Due to significant public interest, the club held the training session at the Volksparkstadion, where between 6,000 and 7,500 supporters gathered to welcome him with chants and banners. During the drills, Vušković notably scored a long-distance goal. While he has completed his training ban, he remains ineligible for official competitive fixtures and friendly matches until November 15, 2026. Coach Merlin Polzin continues to emphasize the importance of managing the 24-year-old’s reintegration carefully to avoid placing undue pressure on him. Polzin also noted the “emotional significance of the moment for the player and his family,” highlighting the club’s long-standing support. Vušković, who has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, will occupy the locker space previously used by his younger brother, Luka Vušković. The four-year suspension was an increase from an original two-year ban, following appeals by WADA and NADA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Throughout the suspension period, HSV maintained support for the player, including a special contract arrangement designed to ensure his eventual return to the club. During his absence, Vušković had been working individually with Joško Vlašić to maintain fitness.
