Maritime and river accidents in the Democratic Republic of│C

Overview

A series of maritime and river accidents has occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On Lake Kivu, a motorized vessel carrying fish traders and goods capsized near Idjwi Island, resulting in at least 12 confirmed deaths and dozens of missing persons. Local officials noted that issues such as overloading and the lack of life jackets persist in the region.

Following this, a barge belonging to the vessel Global Express sank during docking maneuvers at the General Kalume port in Nganda Musolo on the Congo River. The barge was transporting passengers and palm oil; the resulting oil slick has complicated rescue efforts. While several passengers are reported missing, authorities have not yet released an official death toll.
