Maritime initiatives in Vigo have focused on promoting the local sea-based economy and sustainability. The III Feira ESDONMAR was scheduled for late September at the Canido fishing port, organized to connect the public with maritime traditions and social economy through educational activities and tours. Following these efforts, the Vigo Port Authority inaugurated the Atlántida underwater viewer at the Bouzas seafront, an installation designed to allow visitors to observe marine ecosystems. Alongside this, the Institute of Viguese Studies and the Port Authority organized a colloquium titled ‘Vigo e o mar, un futuro sostible’ (Vigo and the sea, a sustainable future) to discuss balancing economic development with urban and environmental needs. In October 2026, the city hosted the 27th edition of Conxemar, a major international frozen seafood trade fair. The event featured 836 exhibitors from 47 countries, serving as a global showcase for the maritime industry. Spanish officials, including Secretary General of Fisheries Isabel Artime, highlighted Spain’s leadership in EU aquaculture and fishing, while regional leaders noted Galicia’s significant economic role, accounting for 48% of the Spanish sector’s turnover. The fair included the Conxemar FAO MAPA International Congress, which addressed global challenges such as digital traceability and artificial intelligence. International participation was notable, including Argentina’s ‘Mar Argentino’ pavilion. Additionally, the event integrated social initiatives through a solidarity operation by the Provincial Food Bank Foundation to redistribute food surpluses to vulnerable populations.
