Maritime migrant arrivals in Southern California
Overview
In late September 2026, two separate maritime incidents involving suspected migrants occurred off the coast of Southern California.
On a Saturday afternoon, a 20-foot panga boat entered Newport Harbor and struck a yacht before being abandoned. Surveillance footage showed individuals exiting the vessel and dispersing into Newport Beach neighborhoods. The Newport Beach Police Department stated there was “no known threat to the City of Newport Beach” following the incident.
On the following Tuesday night, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a 21-foot vessel approximately six miles off Point Loma. Watchstanders at the Joint Harbor Operations Center spotted the suspicious boat, leading to the detention of eight adults. The group was transported to Ballast Point and handed over to U.S. Border Patrol agents for investigation.
