Maritime rescue operations and interdictions involving migrants have been reported in the Atlantic Ocean and the Florida Straits. In early October, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Dominican Navy rescued 61 migrants from a sinking, overloaded vessel near the Samaná Peninsula in the Dominican Republic. This followed a previous shipwreck in the Mona Passage where authorities recovered three bodies and reported 10 missing persons. Later in the month, the U.S. Coast Guard conducted several operations in the Florida Straits, including the rescue of individuals from a disabled Cuban fishing vessel and a migrant on an improvised raft near Key Biscayne. These actions are part of the ‘Vigilant Sentry’ initiative, which utilizes aerial and maritime resources across the Florida Straits, Windward Passage, and Mona Passage to prevent irregular migration toward U.S. territories. Following these rescues, six Cuban migrants were repatriated to Cuba. On October 20, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted an overloaded, makeshift vessel approximately 70 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla in the Mona Passage. The crew of the cutter Winslow Griesser transferred 63 individuals—59 Dominicans and seven Haitians—to two Dominican Navy vessels, the Bellatrix and Acrux, for repatriation to the Dominican Republic. Three occupants from the vessel remain in federal custody in the United States as authorities investigate potential charges regarding illegal reentry attempts.
