In mid October 2026, Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder and Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber planned a visit to the Zugspitze and the Schneefernerhaus environmental research station. Accompanied by Professor Michael Krautblatter, the officials intended to inspect research projects regarding climate adaptation, climate protection, and geo-risks. By late October 2026, Söder transitioned to diplomatic and economic efforts through a four day visit to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The mission aimed to strengthen technological and economic ties, specifically targeting investments in defense, artificial intelligence, and aerospace. In the UAE, Söder scheduled a meeting with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to expedite a 10 billion euro investment agreement for Bavaria, following a broader 40 billion euro investment commitment from the UAE across Germany. From November 1 to November 4, 2026, Söder traveled to Abu Dhabi and Doha accompanied by a delegation including State Chancellery Minister Florian Herrmann. The visit focused on expanding economic relations and securing new investments in technology, the economy, and defense. While the UAE remains Bavaria’s most significant trading partner in the Gulf with an annual trade volume of approximately 1.65 billion euros, the mission in Qatar emphasized defense technology. During the trip, Söder expressed solidarity with Gulf partners regarding regional instability caused by Iranian attacks. Qatar is regarded as a strategic partner in energy, investment, and security.
