Overview
Research has identified the mechanisms contributing to the depletion of the Martian atmosphere. Studies utilizing data from NASA’s MAVEN and China’s Tianwen-1 spacecraft indicate that giant Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, generated by solar wind, create intense plasma bursts. These bursts strip ionized gas from the upper atmosphere at rates ten to one hundred times higher than previously measured steady-state channels.
Because Mars lacks a global magnetic field to protect it, these waves mix the upper atmosphere and facilitate the ejection of particles into space. In response to these findings, researchers have explored theoretical methods to thicken the Martian atmosphere, such as redirecting icy trans-Neptunian objects from the Kuiper Belt or scattered disc toward the planet to deliver water, gases, and ammonia.
