Mars rover discoveries of ancient water

Overview

In late July 2026 NASA reported that the Curiosity rover had sustained serious wheel damage after fourteen years of traversing Mars, but remained operational. At the same time, scientists revisited archival data from the Spirit rover and identified mineral signatures—hematite and altered magnetite—indicating that liquid water once existed across large areas of the planet.

A week later, researchers at Australia's Edith Cowan University produced a high‑resolution mineral map by re‑analyzing hundreds of Spirit measurements from the Gusev crater. The map confirmed the presence of water‑formed minerals and expanded on earlier rover observations, linking Curiosity’s ancient lake findings in Gale crater and Perseverance’s river‑delta searches. Together, the reports illustrate a growing body of evidence that Mars experienced extensive surface water in its early history.
