Senator Jayme Campos entered the race for Mato Grosso governor in early July, denouncing “borrowed” candidates and opposing a municipal‑hospital plan at Várzea Grande’s airport. Governor Otaviano Pivetta (Republicanos) promoted a water‑alliance to address chronic shortages, while the Liberal Party backed pre‑candidate Senator Wellington Fagundes. Percent Brasil polls showed Fagundes ahead with about 28 %, Campos near 20 %, Pivetta 18‑19 % and PSB’s Natasha Slhessarenko around 7 %. The intra‑party battle ended on 30 July when the União Brasil state convention voted 30‑19 (one null, one abstention) to endorse incumbent Governor Pivetta, effectively sidelining Campos. Party president and Senate candidate Mauro Mendes framed the outcome as a continuation of a development model that lifted Mato Grosso from “Series C to Series A,” citing the Central Hospital, duplication of BR‑163, 7,000 km of paved roads and an education ranking jump from 22nd to 8th nationally. The vote was marked by shouting and accusations of betrayal. Governor Pivetta thanked delegates for their confidence and pledged to keep the development trajectory. The convention also formalised União Brasil’s 2026 electoral slate, homologating Gisela Simona for the Chamber of Deputies and confirming additional candidates for the state ~~assembly and federal legislature, reinforcing the~~ assembly. The party’s list will run under the Federação União Progressista alliance with the Progressistas (PP), reinforcing its coalition prospects ahead of a possible second round.
