Overview

The Mauritanian government has approved new legislation to strengthen the national framework for combating narcotics and psychotropic substances. Adopted during a council of ministers meeting on August 27, the bill expands criminal offenses to include the production, manufacturing, transformation, possession, cultivation, and trafficking of drugs.

The new legal measures target criminal organizations by criminalizing the management, financing, and support of trafficking groups. To disrupt these networks, authorities are empowered to conduct parallel financial investigations and freeze or seize assets and equipment linked to illicit activities. This legislative action follows an intensification of security operations and significant seizures by Mauritanian services since July. The move comes amid reports from residents in outskirts of Nouakchott, such as Dar El Bewa, regarding increased drug-related aggression and social instability.
