Mauritania expands foreign investment partnerships

Overview

In July 2026 Mauritania’s state‑owned mining company SNIM signed a cooperation protocol with the World Bank’s International Finance Corp (IFC). The pact aims to improve SNIM’s competitiveness, add value along the mineral chain and attract private‑sector investment in extraction, processing, transport and infrastructure, reflecting renewed international confidence in the country’s mining potential.

A few weeks later, in August 2026, Mauritania signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Russia to broaden cooperation beyond mining into agriculture, energy, fisheries and legal‑institutional frameworks. The agreement signals Mauritania’s strategy to diversify its diplomatic and economic options, while Russia seeks to increase its commercial presence in West Africa, including interest in the under‑developed Bir Allah gas field. Together, the two deals illustrate Mauritania’s push to attract varied foreign partners and expand its economic base across multiple sectors.
