Mauritius is pursuing initiatives to enhance its international connectivity and economic standing. Initially, the Mauritian High Commissioner to Pakistan engaged with business leaders in Islamabad to promote tourism, trade, and investment, highlighting a simplified visa regime and the nation’s role as a gateway to Africa. Following these diplomatic efforts, Mauritius approved the establishment of the National Aviation Consultative Council. This independent body is tasked with advising the government on air access policy and ensuring that aviation sector decisions align with national interests, specifically to optimize long-term connectivity and support the viability of Air Mauritius. The Council will report directly to the Prime Minister and will be led by an independent expert with international aviation experience, supported by specialists in finance, law, and tourism. Its mandate includes implementing a ‘managed-open Air-Access policy’. To further economic integration, the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and Wesgro hosted the South Africa–Mauritius Business Forum in Ebène. The forum sought to transition the bilateral relationship from simple goods trading toward joint production, services, and investment. This follows data showing South Africa was the primary destination for Mauritian exports in 2025, accounting for 13% of the country's total exports. Officials noted that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) provides a framework for expanding these commercial opportunities.
