In Mazara del Vallo, authorities have begun addressing regulatory and economic challenges facing the local fishing industry. On September 19, the Coast Guard seized an illegal fishing net exceeding 200 meters in length near the Colmata B area, resulting in a fine for a local fisherman. By late September, the situation escalated as labor unions Flai Cgil and Uila Uil Trapani declared a state of agitation. Fishermen are protesting a severe economic crisis driven by rising fuel prices and inadequate regional diesel subsidies. Union leaders have warned of further protests unless they can meet with regional officials to revise subsidy programs and address deteriorating working conditions. Following a large assembly, union secretaries Giovanni Di Dia and Leonardo Falco warned that the sector, described as a “vital economic and social pillar,” is at risk of “total collapse.” They specifically criticized a regional government tender regarding diesel subsidies, arguing it fails to protect workers or respect national collective bargaining agreements. They requested an immediate meeting with regional fisheries assessor Luca Sammartino. By early October, the crisis persisted even after the conclusion of the biological moratorium. Labor unions, including Fai Cisl, have maintained the state of agitation, citing unresolved structural issues and an economic downturn. Union leaders have criticized the lack of response from employer associations and are demanding transparency regarding regional funds, suggesting that “50 percent of such funds should be allocated to fishermen under existing contracts.” On October 6, the unrest expanded across Sicily, with fishermen in Mazara del Vallo, Sciacca, and Scoglitti refusing to return to sea. In response to the crisis, the Sicilian Regional Assembly has discussed increasing the regional solidarity fund for fisheries and aquaculture to 17 million euros.
