Sinaloa security crisis: violence and law enforcement surge

The security and political crisis in Sinaloa continues to evolve through state-led recovery efforts, localized violence, and high-level criminal arrests. Interim Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava is implementing an ‘Integral Plan for Security and Governance’ to restore peace, supported by a 56.3 million peso investment in patrol vehicles and communication devices across 17 municipalities. Recent law enforcement operations have yielded significant seizures. In Sinaloa, the Mexican Security Cabinet reported the seizure of over half a ton of methamphetamine and an arsenal including 84 improvised explosive devices, numerous long guns, and thousands of cartridges. ~~These operations led to the arrest of 20 individuals, including three minors.~~ In Mazatlán, the Mexican Navy conducted four operations resulting in the arrest of five individuals. During one raid, authorities discovered and destroyed 76 improvised explosive devices, five hand grenades, and two improvised grenades. In a separate incident, five men were detained with a granular substance and a notebook containing codes related to ‘halconeo’ (surveillance activities). In Guasave, the Mexican Army and state police have surrounded a residence near the Fundadores area and Canal 27. Authorities discovered eight vehicles at the site, four of which feature factory or artisanal armor. The General Prosecutor's Office is currently awaiting a federal judge's authorization for a search warrant to inspect the property for weapons, drugs, or tactical equipment. Despite these actions, political leaders remain skeptical. Nadia Vega Olivas, leader of the PAN in Mazatlán, noted that despite the deployment of approximately 9,000 security elements, intentional homicides have continued to rise, exceeding 150 cases as of September. She argued that increased militarization has not improved public safety and called for a shift toward intelligence and investigative work. ~~This echoes previous criticisms from PRI Sinaloa president César Emiliano Gerardo Lugo, who cited thousands of homicides and missing persons over the past 730 days of intense violence.~~
