Mazda’s July 2026 announcements outlined a next‑generation MX‑5 (code‑named NE) engineered for an all‑electric powertrain while staying within a 1,000‑1,200 kg curb‑weight window. The company will rely on conventional steel and aluminium rather than carbon‑fiber composites. Patent‑level sketches show the battery pack split, with most modules in the transmission tunnel and additional packs behind the seats and ahead of the passenger compartment to preserve balanced handling. CEO Masahiro Moro stressed that the roadster must be ready for a scenario without a combustion engine, and the flexible platform will accommodate a pure‑electric drivetrain, a mild‑hybrid system, or the 2.5‑L Skyactiv‑Z gasoline engine while retaining a manual transmission. The weight target aligns with the current model’s lightest European spec (about 1,003 kg). Mazda reaffirmed a launch no earlier than 2028, initially offering the gasoline engine while the chassis is prepared for future electrification. In a follow‑up statement on 29 July 2026, Moro reiterated the sub‑1,200 kg goal, noting the current MX‑5’s weight and emphasizing that any future electric version must stay close to that figure. The company confirmed that mild‑hybrid options remain under study goal and highlighted the battery layout as a way to add full‑electric capability later without a major weight penalty. On 1 August 2026 Mazda formally announced that the fifth‑generation MX‑5 will debut in 2028 on a completely new platform designed to accommodate a future fully electric powertrain while keeping total weight around 1,200 kg, preserving the classic driving feel. The new model will still be offered with the 2.5‑L Skyactiv‑Z engine and may include a mild‑hybrid system, using conventional engineering materials. The current MX‑5 will remain in production until the new generation arrives. Parallel work continues on a higher‑positioned flagship “hero car” to serve as Mazda’s showcase model.
