McDonald’s has expanded its beverage offerings through energy drink products, leading to both commercial developments and consumer protection concerns. In the United States, the company partnered with Red Bull to launch new products, including the ‘Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer’, as part of a strategy to increase afternoon traffic. This Starting August 17, participating U.S. locations will offer the ‘Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer’, which combines Red Bull with blue raspberry syrup and freeze-dried dragonfruit pieces. The drink contains 80 milligrams of caffeine, and customers can choose a lower-sugar version using Red Bull Zero. The expansion also includes new McCafé standalone 8.4-ounce cans of Red Bull and new soda options. flavors, such as a ‘Vanilla Swirl’ option for Coca-Cola products. Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald’s USA’s chief marketing and customer experience officer, stated the expansion responds to “growing consumer demand for diverse beverage choices.” In Austria, the availability of energy drinks at McDonald’s locations drew scrutiny from Foodwatch Austria. Test purchases revealed that children could buy the ‘Tropical Energy Refresher’ without age verification or caffeine warnings. Medical experts noted that the drink’s caffeine content—approximately 93 mg per standard cup—could cause health issues in minors. Following the inquiry, McDonald’s updated its product information to display caffeine levels, while Foodwatch petitioned the Austrian government to implement statutory age limits for such sales.
